Cigna rebranded Express Scripts' parent division as Evernorth to sell services to rivals

One umbrella wraps Express Scripts, Accredo and Evicore into a health-services shop for other payers and employers — 90% of its business is already external.

What was changed

In September 2020 Cigna rebranded its entire health services segment — pharmacy benefit manager Express Scripts, specialty pharmacy Accredo, medical benefit manager Evicore and the rest — as Evernorth, rolling out from the third quarter. The rebrand, in the works for months before the pandemic, was positioned as the next evolution of the Cigna–Express Scripts combination completed in late 2018.

The strategic point was to sell to everyone, not just Cigna members: Evernorth pitches health services to other payers, employers and government businesses, including those without Cigna medical insurance. It could arrive with an unusual credential — only about 10% of its business comes from Cigna, the remaining 90% from external clients, building on partnerships with Oscar Health, Prime Therapeutics and digital assistant Buoy Health. Cigna brought scale to back it: 185 million-plus global customer relationships, third-largest US commercial insurer, $153.6 billion of 2019 revenue.

Several existing and new products launched under the Evernorth name: Healthy Ways to Work (a return-to-work program quietly offered during the pandemic), fertility program FamilyPath, gene-therapy benefit manager Embarc and mental health platform inMynd. The rebrand involved no big internal reorganization — Express Scripts chief Tim Wentworth stayed on as the division's top executive — and was the first project under Cigna's new CMO Kristen Lauria, hired about six months earlier.

Why it worked

The 90/10 external-to-internal mix made the case: this division's real market was Cigna's competitors, so it needed an identity separate from its parent.

Payers were diversifying for stable revenue, and a one-stop health-services brand let Cigna monetize its 2018 Express Scripts acquisition beyond its own book.

Keeping the operating brands and leadership untouched made it a positioning change, not a reorg — speed to market with new products was the point.

What can be applied

Brand the platform, not the parent: when a division's customers are your competitors, give it a name they can buy without buying you.

Aftermath

The umbrella brand rolled out from Q3 2020 with more Evernorth-branded products promised in the coming months, while Cigna reported health services earnings up 7% year over year in Q2 2020 on organic growth. Longer-term results of the rebrand are not covered in the source.
