Etsy began labelling every listing by the seller's role in making the product
Facing post-pandemic dropshipping doubts, Etsy now requires every item to be tagged made, designed, sourced or handpicked by a seller.
What was changed
In July 2024 Etsy began requiring every item on its marketplace to be listed under one of four tags describing the seller's role in its creation: 'made by a seller', 'designed by a seller', 'sourced by a seller' or 'handpicked by a seller'. A seller who finds vintage shirts falls under handpicked; a ceramic vase from a pottery studio is made by.
CEO Josh Silverman, announcing the change in a video post aimed at sellers, said buyers sometimes want more clarity about why the things they see are allowed, and sellers want clearer rules and enforcement — so Etsy was articulating its policies in a simpler, easier-to-understand way. He stressed this was not a change to what is allowed on the platform, but reinforcing and clarifying it.
The context is Etsy's post-pandemic identity problem. Founded in 2005 as the place for handmade and unique pieces, it saw rapid inventory growth after COVID-19, bringing bulk goods, drop shipping and competitive pricing that made some buyers worry the platform was no longer what it used to be, as Modern Retail put it.
The tags came alongside a renewed enforcement push: Etsy said it removed four times the number of items violating its handmade policy in the previous year alone, and hoped the clearer policy would aid that mission. The company had also recently enacted a ban on certain sex toys and explicit content, effective July 29.
Why it worked
The four-tag scheme admits a spectrum of legitimacy — vintage finds and design-led manufacturing stay allowed — instead of pretending everything on the platform is handmade.
It converts a fuzzy 'handmade' promise into per-listing disclosures, shifting the burden of honesty onto sellers and giving buyers a filterable signal.
Pairing the labels with a quantified enforcement surge (4x removals) shows Etsy treating trust as a product feature it ships, not just a policy it states.
What can be applied
When a marketplace's identity erodes, labels are cheaper than bans: forcing sellers to state their role keeps design-led goods allowed while making dropshipped passthroughs visible.
Aftermath
The tags rolled out as a requirement for all listings from July 2024, alongside the explicit-content ban effective July 29. Etsy said the clearer policy should aid its enforcement of the handmade rules, in which it had already quadrupled removals year over year. The source reports no downstream metrics on buyer trust or sales.
