NorthShore-Edward-Elmhurst became Endeavor Health two years after merging

Two years after merging into Illinois' third-largest health system, NorthShore and Edward-Elmhurst dropped both legacy names for Endeavor Health.

What was changed

NorthShore University HealthSystem and Edward-Elmhurst Health closed their merger in January 2022, creating Illinois' third-largest health system. On December 5, 2023, the nonprofit announced it would rebrand as Endeavor Health — nearly two years later — retiring both legacy names for a neutral one while keeping each hospital's own name operating under the Endeavor brand.

The system the name has to cover is large: nine hospitals across Chicago's northern and western suburbs and the city's North Side, more than 300 additional sites of care, and over 27,000 employees under CEO J.P. Gallagher. Around the rebrand, the system reported $1.4 billion in revenue for the quarter ended September 30 — up 8% from the same period a year earlier — and $8.2 million in operating income, against a $39.2 million operating loss in the prior-year period.

The unified name is the end of a build-up: NorthShore had acquired Swedish Covenant Health in 2020 and Northwest Community Healthcare in 2021 before the merger. An earlier attempt to combine with Advocate Health Care fell through in 2017 under regulatory scrutiny — Advocate instead merged with Aurora Health Care and then closed a $27 billion deal with Atrium Health in 2022.

Brand channels and communications — websites, signs, uniforms — shift to the Endeavor name in the coming months, with a new ad campaign launching in the first quarter of 2024.

Why it worked

Two legacy names mean a permanent pecking-order question inside a merged system; a neutral name ends it.

Keeping hospital names local preserves decades of community brand equity while unifying the corporate identity.

The rebrand lands alongside a documented financial swing (+$8.2M operating income vs a $39.2M loss), marking the integration's consolidation phase.

It contrasts with the failed Advocate-NorthShore path: the same goal pursued by merger-of-equals naming was blocked, while the acquired-scale-plus-rebrand path closed.

A rolling migration (signs, sites, uniforms) with an ad campaign after shows the sequencing of a low-risk rebrand.

What can be applied

A merged organisation carrying two legacy names never finishes integrating: a neutral brand, with local hospital names kept underneath, ends the hierarchy question without spending local equity.

Aftermath

Brand migration across websites, signage and uniforms continued in the months after the December 2023 announcement, with the first Endeavor ad campaign slated for Q1 2024. The source reports no patient-volume or brand-tracking results.
