Rella's hard pivot took a creator tool to $3M ARR on four founders (interview)

In a Practical Founders interview, Natalie Barbu recounts relaunching Rella from $25K and zero revenue to $3M ARR in 12 months with four co-founders.

What was changed

In an interview on the Practical Founders Podcast (episode #169, published November 6, 2025), Rella founder and CEO Natalie Barbu recounts how the company survived a near-shutdown and relaunched into profitability. Rella is a SaaS platform for social media teams and agencies; Barbu came to it from YouTube, where she grew a following of over 300,000 and noticed how fragmented creator tools were.

She recalls that the first version, Rella 1.0, targeted content creators on a freemium model and made no revenue. With $25K in the bank and four cofounders, she says, they thought they would shut it down. A viral video aimed at social media teams immediately created paid users and revenue for a new product, so the team pivoted and relaunched as Rella 2.0 — an all-in-one workspace with content planning, scheduling, collaboration boards, billing, analytics and an AI content strategist for social media teams.

By her account, in just 12 months the relaunch took the company from no revenue and no funding to almost $3M in ARR run-rate with only the four co-founder employees. She says the cofounders paid themselves nothing for about two years, supporting themselves with side gigs and her social-media income, and gave themselves raises once Rella 2.0 could afford it. (All figures are self-reported in the interview.)

Why it worked

The pivot changed the customer, not the tech: the same product concept found paying users the moment it aimed at teams instead of individual creators.

Charging early was the lesson freemium taught the hard way — monetization became non-negotiable in the relaunch.

A four-person team kept the whole $3M run-rate in-house, proving the lean-crew approach the interview leans on.

What can be applied

A stalled product often needs a new customer, not more features: the same team pivoted from creators to social-media teams and found paying demand in days.

Aftermath

As of the November 2025 interview, Rella 2.0 spans planning, scheduling, collaboration, billing, analytics and an AI content strategist, and the four cofounders had raised their own pay from customer revenue.
