UnityPoint Health ran dozens of analytics projects for eight years — $100M+ in gains

The 39-hospital system built improvement on a shared data platform with Health Catalyst: shorter stays, fewer ED visits, $100M-plus in savings and revenue.

What was changed

UnityPoint Health, a Midwest nonprofit system of 39 hospitals, started its analytics push with a single project on length of stay, built on a 'light version' of Health Catalyst's data platform. The platform pulled data from the EHR, accounting, lab and other systems into one place, so every later project could reuse the same spine instead of rebuilding pipelines.

Over eight years and what both sides describe as 'dozens and dozens' of projects, the system logged $100 million-plus in improvements: $41 million in cost savings over two years from reducing length of stay, $32 million of spending cut within a year through AI-enabled care management, and $17.4 million in direct costs saved over six years by spotting and reducing unnecessary red blood cell transfusions.

It also recorded a 39% relative reduction in ED visits and a 54% relative reduction in inpatient admissions, notched $31 million in average annual shared savings since 2012, and says the projects have held a benefit-cost ratio above 15:1 over the last seven years.

Health Catalyst CEO Dan Burton credits UnityPoint's commitment to a platform approach over one-off tools, and says AI layered on the platform took analyst leaders from roughly 45–55% inaccuracy to 95% accuracy in reading performance across hundreds of visualizations. The trade-off is real: the platform costs more upfront than point solutions, and only just over 100 of the vendor's 600-plus clients have scaled to this kind of enterprise relationship.

Why it worked

One data spine served every later project — each new initiative inherited clean, cross-system data instead of starting from scratch.

The system accepted high upfront and last-mile costs that point-solution vendors avoid, in exchange for compounding returns across dozens of use cases.

AI interpretation on top of the platform separated signal from noise, so improvement teams worked on the outliers that actually needed changing.

What can be applied

A shared data platform beats a shelf of point solutions: the first project pays for the spine that every later project runs on.

Aftermath

UnityPoint frames the approach as transferable — 'making faster, smarter decisions informed by data is relevant to all' — and says balancing short-term constraints against long-term value enabled gains across clinical, operational and financial domains. Health Catalyst continues to hold the relationship up as its model for enterprise analytics partnerships.
