Wärtsilä sold its last two Portfolio Business units, completing six years of pruning
Gas Solutions went to Mutares and Water & Waste to Solix on 1 June 2026 — the Portfolio Business Wärtsilä built in 2020 for laggards now has nothing left in it.
What was changed
Technology group Wärtsilä completed two divestments on 1 June 2026: the Gas Solutions business (EUR 394 million 2025 revenue) went to Mutares SE & Co. KGaA under an agreement announced 22 December 2025, and the Water & Waste business (EUR 54 million 2025 revenue) went to Solix Group AB under an agreement announced 5 February 2026. Both units had been performing below the group's profitability targets.
The closures emptied the Portfolio Business Wärtsilä established in early 2020 as a home for business units that no longer fit. President and CEO Håkan Agnevall said the company had now divested all the units moved there over the years, calling it a successful execution of the strategy to accelerate performance improvements and unlock value through divestments.
With the exits, Wärtsilä is left as a focused marine and energy technology group: 17,900 employees in 78 countries and net sales of EUR 6.9 billion in 2025, listed on Nasdaq Helsinki.
Why it worked
Both divested units had persistently run below Wärtsilä's profitability targets, dragging on a group built around marine and energy lifecycle solutions.
The 2020 Portfolio Business structure made the intention explicit: these units were for sale, not for fixing in place.
Selling to trade and industrial buyers (Mutares, Solix) let the units leave with their employees and customers intact rather than being shut.
The two-stage signing (December 2025 and February 2026) and same-day completion sequenced the exit without disrupting ongoing operations.
What can be applied
A 'portfolio business' parking lot only works if it empties: giving weak units a structure, buyers and a clock turned a cleanup promise into two signed exits.
Aftermath
The business units and their employees transferred to the new owners on 1 June 2026. The release discloses no sale prices; Wärtsilä says it is now a more focused and profitable company.
