What was changed
Accutron, launched by Bulova in 1960, was the world's first fully electronic watch — its tuning-fork movement was accurate to ±5 seconds a month and became one of the most important innovations in watchmaking history. After Citizen bought Bulova in 2008, little was heard of the Accutron invention.
A decade of research and development produced a relaunch: in August 2020 Accutron unveiled the world's first watches powered by electrostatic energy. Twin turbines spin between electrodes with body motion, storing energy that powers two motors, including a world-first electrostatic motor for the sweeping second hand.
The relaunch opened with two collections: the Spaceview 2020, using the same open dial and green accents as the 1960s original, and the Accutron DNA, a modern reinterpretation. Citizen Watch America president Jeffrey Cohen called the new movement a tribute to the Spaceview design that made Accutron an industry trailblazer.
What it achieved
World's first watches powered by electrostatic energy, unveiled Aug 2020: Spaceview 2020 and DNA, accurate to ±5 seconds a month.
Why it worked
Accutron's name meant accuracy and electronic innovation, so the relaunch had to be technological, not retro.
A decade of R&D gave the brand a genuinely new claim: first electrostatic-powered watch.
Recreating the iconic Spaceview dial connected the new movement to the 1960s story.
What can be applied
Revive a technology brand by resurrecting its founding innovation — Accutron came back on a new electrostatic movement, not just its logo.
Aftermath
The Spaceview 2020 and DNA launched in 2020, and Accutron continued as a distinct collection under Citizen's stable. For the watch industry it was a rare example of a heritage brand returning on the strength of new engineering rather than vintage reissues.
