Steven Yang, a Google engineer, founded Anker in June 2011 out of Changsha, China, and spent the next twelve months prototyping a laptop replacement battery before getting it right. Co-founder Zhao Dongping joined in early 2012, and by the end of that year the workshop had climbed from about 100 to 1,000 units a day. The stated bet: make simple devices better than the giants and let the market prove it.

The channel was the strategy. Anker launched through Amazon's marketplace and mastered its feedback loop — every box had a review card, every listing a better spec. The PowerIQ fast-charging technology (2013) gave reviewers something concrete to praise, and Anker became the best-selling charging brand on Amazon year after year. Revenue reached about $600M in 2017, 60% from chargers, and the playbook branched into sub-brands — SoundCore audio, eufy smart home, Nebula projectors, Roav — each owning its shelf.

The scale compounds: 2018 revenue ¥5.23B, 98% from outside China with 40–50% from the US; on 24 August 2020 Anker listed on ChiNext in the first batch of registration-system IPOs — ¥66.32 issue price, +108.5% on day one, a market cap above ¥56B. In 2023 revenue reached ¥17.51B (+22.85%) with net profit of ¥1.62B (+41.22%) and a 43.53% gross margin; Amazon still contributed 55.95% of revenue, but own D2C channels grew fastest (+83.9%), and R&D counted 1,918 people.

From a 2012 laptop-battery prototype to ¥17.5B revenue (2023) at 43.5% gross margin, ~96% outside China — via Amazon bestseller shelves and eufy/soundcore sub-brands.

Anker used Amazon as a brand-building platform, not just a channel: review-card feedback loops and a genuinely better spec (PowerIQ) turned commodity accessories into a ranked, repeatable brand.

Brand before volume: premium pricing and five sub-brands let Anker escape the Shenzhen race-to-the-bottom and reach 43% gross margins.

Made-in-China can become a brand without billboards: engineer a better spec, let marketplace reviews do the marketing, and stack sub-brands for adjacencies instead of racing down a price ladder.

2023 revenue ¥17.51B (+22.85%) with net profit ¥1.62B; Amazon still supplies 56% of sales but own D2C sites grew 84% in 2023; R&D counts 1,918 people on ¥1.41B of investment. Anker is the clearest proof that a Shenzhen electronics maker can turn itself into a global consumer brand through marketplace reputation — a playbook now copied across Chinese outbound consumer electronics.
