What was changed
CHC Group, one of the world's largest helicopter operators serving offshore oil and gas, filed for Chapter 11 on May 5, 2016 in the Northern District of Texas with about $1.6 billion of debt obligations, after the post-2014 oil-price collapse cut customer demand and the grounding of its EC225 fleet.
The plan transferred the operating business to a new company, with participating creditors receiving new equity and providing $300 million of fresh capital. Because CHC Parent was a Cayman company, the group coordinated U.S. Chapter 11 with Cayman court approval of the asset transfer, protecting the deal from dissenting creditors. The Texas court approved the plan on March 3, 2017, and the group exited Chapter 11 on March 24.
CHC emerged 'a significantly stronger, better-capitalized company,' in CEO Karl Fessenden's words, and immediately pursued diversification. It extended an Aker BP North Sea contract through September 2021, kept winning oil and gas work in Australia and EMEA, and began targeting the offshore wind market.
What it achieved
The plan kept the group going with $300M of fresh creditor capital; post-emergence CHC extended North Sea contracts and moved into offshore wind.
Why it worked
~$1.6B of debt with oil demand collapsing.
Creditors funded $300M of new capital at exit.
Cayman courts protected the cross-border plan.
Post-emergence wins included a North Sea extension.
What can be applied
For asset-heavy operators, restructuring is about preserving the fleet: CHC's move to a new company brought $300M of creditor capital, and the leaner group won contracts its predecessor could not.
Aftermath
CHC continued as one of the largest offshore helicopter groups, expanding into search-and-rescue and renewables. The case is a model for cross-border restructurings where a Cayman parent and U.S. operations must be reset in two courts at once.
