Futurama, created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen, ran on Fox from 1999 to 2003, was revived once on Comedy Central in 2010, and was canceled again. By 2022 it had been off the air for nearly a decade.

In February 2022 Hulu ordered 20 new episodes. The key decision was keeping the original creative team and most of the voice cast: Billy West, Katey Sagal, Tress MacNeille and others returned. Bender's voice actor John DiMaggio was initially not attached and faced recasting, but fan pressure helped bring him back.

The revival premiered on July 24, 2023. In November 2023 Hulu renewed it for two more seasons, adding 20 more episodes to the original order and keeping the series alive.

Hulu ordered 20 episodes in 2022; the show premiered July 2023 and was renewed for 20 more by November 2023.

Futurama's fans had already resurrected it once, proving the audience was durable.

Hulu bet on the original creators and cast instead of a cheaper reboot.

DiMaggio's return kept Bender, the show's most iconic character, intact.

Streaming economics let a cult show run at a scale broadcast could not justify.

A beloved brand with a devoted fan base can be restarted by the right distributor; the original cast returning matters as much as the IP.

The 2023 season premiered to strong reviews and was followed by another season in 2024; Hulu then renewed the series for seasons 13 and 14, extending a show that has now been canceled and revived three times.
