For decades Grand Seiko was a top-of-line collection sold only inside Japan — a statement of Japanese precision that collectors overseas could not easily buy. Seiko began exporting it in 2010, but it still sat on dials alongside the mass-market Seiko name, and Swiss brands out-gunned it on prestige.

At Baselworld on 23 March 2017 Seiko Watch president and CEO Shinji Hattori announced the decisive step: Grand Seiko would become a completely independent brand, with the Grand Seiko logo moved to the 12 o'clock position on all models. Shuji Takahashi, then president and COO, explained that the brand's identity and nature were unchanged, but its management was now entirely separate.

The decision triggered a corporate build-out. In 2018 the Grand Seiko Corporation was set up for the United States, followed by Grand Seiko Europe in 2020 and Grand Seiko Asia-Pacific in 2022. Movement design, manufacture and marketing were all split from Seiko, so the sub-brand no longer shared engineering with the budget line.

Grand Seiko became a fixture of international watch fairs and collections. Once watchmakers could only buy it in Japan, by March 2017 nearly 200 overseas stores were stocking it across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, the US and Central and South America — a fast pace given it had only launched overseas in 2010. The Evolution 9 design system launched in 2022 codified its style for a new generation, and the brand kept producing its own 9S calibres.
