What was changed
In early 2020 Hologic bet its installed base could solve the COVID testing shortage. The company's Panther molecular diagnostic systems, more than 1,800 installed globally and the largest high-throughput base of any platform, could each process over 1,000 coronavirus tests in 24 hours.
In April 2020 Hologic said it would initially supply 3 million research-use tests and produce at least 1 million Aptima SARS-CoV-2 assays per week from May, on the way to an EUA and CE mark for the same assay.
The scale-up transformed the financials: in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2020 total revenue rose 55.6% to $1,347.0 million, molecular diagnostics revenue rose 375.8% to $818.9 million, and GAAP net income was $495.0 million versus a year-earlier loss. Full-year revenue reached $3,776.4 million and net income $1,115.2 million.
What it achieved
Q4 FY2020 revenue rose 55.6% to $1.35B and molecular diagnostics sales jumped 375.8%; full-year net income hit $1.12B after a $204M loss.
Why it worked
Hologic already had the largest installed base of high-throughput molecular instruments.
It committed to manufacturing millions of tests before EUA was even granted.
It prioritised COVID tests over other diagnostics, accepting short-term cannibalisation.
Its supply chain and European teams scaled production within months.
What can be applied
If you own a platform others can't quickly copy, pivot its capacity to the crisis: Hologic's installed Panther base let it scale COVID testing in months.
Aftermath
Hologic kept expanding capacity through 2021 as COVID waves continued, and the crisis solidified its diagnostics franchise: the pandemic year swung the company from a net loss to more than $1 billion of annual net income.
