Illawarra Hawks won back their name by hitting the NBL's 4,378-member target

The NBL stripped Illawarra from the Hawks' name after the club was sold; a member-and-sponsor drive hit 4,379 against a 4,378 target and the name came back.

What was changed

The Illawarra Hawks are a foundation NBL club — in the league since 1979, 43 straight years — but after another bout of voluntary administration the club was sold to an international syndicate including Dorry Kordahi, former co-owner of the Sydney Kings. The NBL marked the sale by stripping 'Illawarra' from the name, and commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said the club had to prove 'sufficient support from the Illawarra community to make the club a viable proposition into the future in the local market'.

The league set a precise bar: 4,378 new members, one for each year in the league. Wollongong's deputy lord mayor Tania Brown called the demand 'blackmail', arguing the ambiguity would scare off corporate sponsors; fans were asked to pay $79 for supporter memberships that did not even include game tickets. The club played its first five games of the season without the region's name on the jersey.

On the eve of the first home game the target was passed — 4,379 — helped by fresh sponsorship announcements, including sponsors buying supporter memberships themselves. The NBL reinstated the full name, with league owner Larry Kestelman citing the met target and 'increased corporate support from the local community'. Kordahi called it 'a proud day for our club, our corporate partners and our fans'.

Why it worked

After administration, the club had to demonstrate a viable local base, not just a new owner.

The NBL made reinstatement conditional on a concrete, countable show of community demand.

Sponsors came in once supporters had proven the base — several bought supporter memberships themselves.

What can be applied

A stripped identity can be earned back: give fans a concrete number to hit and they will fund the name's return themselves.

Aftermath

Players wore Illawarra Hawks singlets again, and the club kept its full name into the season. Kestelman said the league had 'utmost faith' in the new ownership group to keep the club financially viable; Kordahi said the club had been lifted 'off the canvas and back into the NBL limelight'.
