illycaffè was founded in Trieste in 1933 by Francesco Illy. His grandson Andrea Illy took the helm as the third generation to head the firm, and led it for over two decades as chairman and CEO.

Under his leadership the company expanded its global penetration from 29 countries to 140 countries and increased revenues by more than 130%, selling a single blend of nine pure Arabica varieties to over 100,000 businesses.

The growth rested on a prestige, single-product model: a consistent blend and a recognisable red can, sold through cafés and a monochrome design language, rather than a broad range of products.

Under Andrea, illycaffè expanded from 29 to 140 countries and increased revenues by more than 130%, built around one tightly controlled 100% Arabica blend.

One standardised blend let the brand be identifiably 'illy' in every market.

Selling to cafés and restaurants gave it distribution without owning retail.

A premium price on a consistent product supported higher margins.

A long family horizon allowed sustained investment in the brand rather than quarterly churn.

A family firm can globalise without diluting the product by standardising one hero blend and one visual identity, then expanding the number of places it is served rather than the range.

illycaffè remained family-controlled with Andrea Illy as chairman, later bringing in an outside CEO while keeping the family brand and the single-blend model. It became a reference example of a medium-sized family firm winning global niche leadership.
