Luckin Coffee opened its first store in October 2017, hit 2,000+ stores in 18 months on subsidies and an app-first model, and listed on Nasdaq on 17 May 2019 at $17, raising about $561 million (up 18% on day one). By December 2019 it ran 4,507 stores — already passing Starbucks China. Losses ran deep: ¥1.62B (2018), ¥3.16B (2019), ¥5.6B (2020).

The crash came from inside. On 2 April 2020 the board announced an internal probe that found the COO and others had fabricated about ¥2.2B of sales in Q2–Q4 2019; the stock fell ~80%. Luckin delisted on 29 June 2020 (last close $1.38), entered provisional liquidation in the Cayman Islands and US bankruptcy protection, paid a $180M SEC penalty and settled a $175M class action (October 2021). Guo Jinyi took over as CEO; a January 2022 capital injection from Centurium, IDG and Ares SSG put the new investors above 50% voting power. Franchising was relaunched in January 2021.

The rebound was operational: first quarterly operating profit in Q1 2022, the 10,000th store in June 2023 with revenue above Starbucks China, then 2023 revenue of ¥24.9B (+87.3%) and 2024 revenue of ¥34.5B (+38.4%) with ¥5.8B net profit and 6,092 net new stores — including 113 overseas. Shares still trade over-the-counter; reports in late 2025 floated a return to a US exchange.

Reborn: ¥24.9B revenue (+87%) and 16,000+ stores in 2023, surpassing Starbucks China; ¥34.5B revenue and ¥5.8B profit in 2024 — all without relisting.

Self-exposure plus a change of control worked as a controlled burn: the fraudsters left, capital (Centurium) got a clean company, and the app, store network and brand survived the crash.

The subsidy engine left durable assets — an app-first order model, algorithmic picks, franchise economics — that a disciplined operator could switch from growth to profitability.

An accounting fraud need not kill the business model: users, data and format survive, and a board that cuts out the fraudsters can rebuild trust through restated numbers and real profit.

2024: revenue ¥34.5B (+38.4%), net profit ¥5.8B, 6,092 net new stores and 113 overseas (Singapore, Malaysia, US); company guidance pointed past 30,000 stores in 2025. Same-store sales fell 16.7% in 2024 and a small loss appeared in Q1 2025 as the 9.9-yuan price war with rival Cotti squeezed margins. Luckin has not relisted on a main exchange and still trades OTC (LKNCY).
