Masters of the Universe launched in 1982 as a toy-first line, with the Filmation cartoon following in 1983. The figures were chunky, colourful and instantly readable, built around a whole world of vehicles, playsets and minicomics rather than a single hero.

After years dormant, Mattel revived the line in 2020 with Masters of the Universe Origins. It kept the classic 5.5-inch scale and retro packaging but added modern articulation and cleaner play value, aimed squarely at collectors and nostalgic older fans.

In 2021 Mattel introduced Masterverse, a larger, more detailed 7-inch line tied to Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The two-track approach let the brand serve retro collectors and premium modern collectors without forcing one line to do everything.

Mattel treated the property again as a toy ecosystem, with Origins, Masterverse, Cartoon Collection and movie-era products coexisting. The 2026 live-action film brought mainstream attention, but the comeback had already been happening in the aisles for years.

Mattel revived Masters of the Universe with the Origins line from 2020, then added Masterverse (2021) and Cartoon Collection, building a 2026 live-action film around it.

The 1982 figures were toy-first and built a whole world, not just a hero.

Masterverse split the audience into retro and premium collectors.

Multiple concurrent lines avoided the trap of one revival doing everything.

Mattel respected the absurdity and weirdness that made the brand work.

The toy comeback happened before the 2026 movie, not because of it.

A nostalgia IP works if you respect it; Mattel revived He-Man by giving collectors the chunky, toy-first feel they remembered rather than reinterpreting it into something else.

Masters of the Universe became a multi-line brand again, with Origins for retro collectors, Masterverse for premium collectors, Cartoon Collection for animation fans and movie-era products for the 2026 live-action film. The revival began with toys and collectors, not with a trailer, and demonstrated that a nostalgic IP can support more than one audience at the same time.
