Novo Nordisk's lineage is two Danish insulin laboratories that merged in 1989; for most of its life the company was a category champion in diabetes care. By the mid-2010s that category had matured — the growth story needed a molecule that worked beyond insulin management. On 5 December 2017 the FDA approved Ozempic (semaglutide), Novo's first once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist, for type-2 diabetes.

Semaglutide hit three things at once: better glucose control, weight loss, and once-a-week convenience. When the same molecule, rebranded as Wegovy, took the weight-loss indication forward and oral versions followed, the market repriced the company's entire pipeline. The valuation curve shows it: about DKK 1 trillion in January 2020, more than DKK 2 trillion by December 2022 — larger than Denmark's twelve biggest companies combined.

The boom peaked in the 2020s: in March 2024 Novo's market value reached $604B, briefly above Tesla, making it Europe's most valuable company — valued higher than Denmark's entire annual GDP. GLP-1 drugs became a global pharmaceutical phenomenon, and the one-molecule bet of 2017 carried the whole Danish company with it.

From diabetes leader to Europe's top company: value doubled Jan 2020-Dec 2022 and hit $604B in March 2024 — above Tesla and Denmark's GDP

The molecule repeated the company's founding pattern: one category-creating product rather than a diversified portfolio — semaglutide did for the 2020s what insulin did for the 1920s.

Once-weekly dosing was the unlock: convenience plus efficacy plus the weight effect crossed the line from diabetes drug to mass-market phenomenon.

The patience was structural: a century of peptide manufacturing know-how meant Novo could ramp supply where better-funded rivals could not — the moat was industrial, not clinical.

When your category plateaus, the answer can be one molecule that stretches it: if it also crosses into a mass need, the value compounds on an industrial moat no one else has

By 2024-2026 GLP-1 demand reordered pharma: supply constraints, counterfeit markets and a war for capacity, as Novo's valuation pulled the entire Danish economy into the story while regulators and rivals raced to catch up.
