In 2012 Falguni Nayar had spent 18-plus years at Kotak Mahindra (managing director) when she set herself an age-50 deadline, resigned, and launched Nykaa with family money. India's e-commerce was still about 1.5% of retail, beauty was sold through offline department stores and single-brand boutiques, and no multi-brand online beauty player existed — Amazon and Flipkart had not gone deep into the category.

Her moves read like a category thesis: a multi-brand vertical with its own inventory (not a lightweight marketplace); the first physical store opened 2014–15; her own brand Nykaa Cosmetics arrived in 2015 and grew into a House of Nykaa portfolio; and she refused the discount wars of Indian e-commerce — 'We didn't want to be a discount store… sell the right colour of lipstick at full price'. A content community (Nykaa Network) supplied the trust and advice beauty requires.

The model compounded. Nykaa became India's first woman-led unicorn in 2020; on 10 November 2021 it listed at ₹1,125, raising ₹5,352 crore with 82x oversubscription, opened +79.4% (₹2,018) and closed +89.2% (₹2,129) for a ₹95,437 crore (~$12.9B) market cap, making Nayar India's wealthiest self-made woman. FY24 revenue reached ₹6,385.62 crore (+24%) with net profit of ₹39.74 crore; by late 2025 Nykaa ran 265 stores in 90 cities with 49 million cumulative customers.

India's first woman-led unicorn and beauty leader: 2021 IPO raised ₹5,352cr to a ₹95,437cr ($12.9B) day-one cap; FY24 revenue ₹6,386cr and ~265 stores by 2025.

Beauty needs trust, advice and experience: vertical depth — own brands, a content community, physical counters — beat platform breadth in a category the giants ignored.

Refusing the discount war made the brand the moat: full-price lipstick sold on selection and expertise could not be undercut into oblivion like commoditized categories.

Pick a category giants ignore and go deep where they are broad — inventory, own brands, stores — while refusing to compete on price; in trust categories, depth plus premium beats scale plus subsidy.

Nykaa kept compounding after listing: FY24 revenue ₹6,385.62cr (+24%) and net profit ₹39.74cr; Q2 FY26 revenue ₹2,346cr with 265 stores across 90 cities, 49M cumulative customers and own-brand GMV up 54%. The market repriced it down to ~$5.4B by March 2025 as Reliance's Tira and other beauty players entered, testing whether vertical depth remains defensible against Indian retail's biggest wallet.
