What was changed
OneWeb set out to build a low-earth-orbit broadband constellation of about 650 satellites, but ran out of cash in early 2020 before the network was complete and filed for Chapter 11.
In July 2020 a consortium of the UK government and Bharti Global made a winning bid of $1 billion for the company. After regulatory approvals, including U.S. court approval in October and an FCC license transfer on October 27, the sale closed on November 20, 2020.
The UK government and Bharti each took 42.2 percent of OneWeb, with SoftBank and Hughes Network Systems holding most of the rest. Bharti chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal noted the deal secured valuable global spectrum plus the $3.3 billion already invested in satellites and ground systems.
OneWeb emerged with a new chief executive, Neil Masterson, and immediately confirmed a December 17 launch of 36 satellites from Russia's Vostochny Cosmodrome. The company aimed to finish the constellation of about 650 satellites by the end of 2022, with Arctic service starting in late 2021.
What it achieved
Emerged November 20, 2020 with a $1B equity injection from the UK government and Bharti, resumed launches and kept a $3.3B-plus invested constellation.
Why it worked
A $1B bid valued OneWeb's spectrum and in-orbit assets more than liquidation would.
The UK and Bharti brought both capital and commercial telecom expertise.
Regulatory approvals were sequenced so the sale closed cleanly.
Resuming launches immediately kept momentum and customer commitments.
What can be applied
For a capital-heavy project mid-build, a buyer that values the spectrum and assets can rescue more than liquidation; new owners restart the plan with fresh equity and commercial focus.
Aftermath
After emergence, OneWeb continued launching and reached commercial broadband service, becoming a wholesale connectivity provider for telecoms and governments. The rescue is often cited as an example of strategic buyers preserving a half-built, capital-intensive asset rather than letting it be dismantled.
