Streets of Rage was one of Sega's most beloved Mega Drive franchises of the early 1990s, but the series had been on an extended hiatus since the mid-1990s. In 2020, Sega licensed it to French publisher Dotemu and developers Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games for a true fourth entry.

Streets of Rage 4 launched at the end of April 2020 across PC, consoles and Switch. It revived the core beat-'em-up with hand-drawn art and a new special move mechanic, and reviews put it at an 82 Metacritic average.

The revival sold over 1.5 million copies in just over four months, according to publisher Dotemu, and by April 2021 the game had passed 2.5 million downloads worldwide. Dotemu followed with the paid Mr. X Nightmare expansion, adding three characters and a survival mode.

Streets of Rage 4 sold over 1.5 million copies in its first four months and passed 2.5 million downloads by April 2021, plus a paid Mr. X Nightmare DLC.

Sega let outside studios own the revival instead of forcing an in-house sequel.

The developers kept the classic gameplay while modernizing presentation.

1.5M sales in four months proved nostalgia had paying demand.

DLC extended a hit into an ongoing franchise.

Licensing a dormant brand to small, passionate studios can outperform in-house revival: Sega gave Dotemu creative freedom, and respect for the original made a 25-year-old beat-'em-up a hit.

Streets of Rage 4 became a template for reviving dormant Sega franchises with indie partners: the 2.5-million download milestone by April 2021 supported paid DLC and new content, and the success encouraged publishers to license classic brands to specialist studios rather than let them rot.
