What was changed
When South Korean churches faced restrictions on services and gatherings during the pandemic, people sought audio recordings of familiar pastors reading the Bible. Choo Hun-yup saw a way to turn that improvised response into a repeatable product.
He launched Biblely in 2022 through startup Voiselah, letting pastors and laypeople record the Bible for a fee. Its central choice was to use generative AI to reproduce a trusted person's voice: pastor Kim Byung-hee recorded the entire Bible in about an hour, then played it for his children.
The positioning mattered. Choo said Biblely focused on helping people through the Bible rather than replacing religious leaders, while some pastors acknowledged congregational concerns about taking a technological shortcut. Familiar voices offered focus and imagination without asking churches to abandon their own leaders.
By September 2024, Biblely had partnered with around 50 churches representing roughly 1.5 million people. Choo also took an English version to CES 2023 in Las Vegas, showing that the pandemic-era solution could travel beyond South Korea.
What it achieved
Biblely partnered with around 50 churches representing about 1.5 million people, and its English version reached CES 2023 in Las Vegas.
Why it worked
Pandemic restrictions disrupted normal church services and gatherings.
People wanted Bible readings in the familiar voices of their pastors.
AI reduced the time needed for a pastor to record the entire Bible to about an hour.
Positioning the product as support for leaders kept its role compatible with churches.
An English version gave the Korean product a route to an international audience.
What can be applied
When a trusted institution is disrupted, make new technology preserve its familiar ritual. That lowers resistance and gives the product a role alongside professionals, not as their replacement.
Aftermath
Biblely expanded its church partnerships and overseas presentation, while pastors' mixed reactions showed that adoption depended on trust as much as voice quality. Its product remained an assistive audio layer: the company concentrated on the Bible and said it was helping people, not replacing pastors.
