TransferWise was founded in January 2011 in London by Kristo Käärmann (ex-Deloitte) and Taavet Hinrikus (one of Skype's earliest employees). Living between London and Tallinn, the pair were paying banks 5-8% to move money, with most of the cost hidden inside the exchange rate. Their first year processed ~€10M by matching opposite-direction transfers between the two cities.

The mechanism: pair customers who need opposite currency flows, move money locally in each country, and charge a visible fee (~0.5%) on the true mid-market rate — no hidden spread, no SWIFT. The company reached profitability in 2017 (sixth year; £1B monthly volume, 2M+ users), hit a $3.5B valuation in 2019, and renamed itself Wise in February 2021. On 7 July 2021 it listed on the London Stock Exchange by direct listing (no new shares, no raise), opening at 800p for an ~£8B / $11B market cap — then the largest tech listing in LSE history.

Scale followed transparency: FY2024 revenue £1,052M (+24%) with 12.8M customers; FY2025 reached 15.6M customers and £145.2B volume with a Q4 average fee of 0.53%; FY2026 (first year reported in USD) brought net revenue $2,502.8M (+19%), 18.9M customers and $243.5B cross-currency volume — attacking a ~$43T annual cross-border flow. Wise now operates account, card, business and B2B platform layers, and in 2026 proposed shifting its primary listing to the US, keeping the LSE as secondary.

A ~0.5% transparent fee on a $43T market: 18.9M customers, $243.5B volume and $2.5B revenue (FY2026), after an $11B LSE direct listing banks couldn't answer.

Banks hide the markup because invisible costs survive scrutiny; Wise made transparency the product — measurable, repeatable and shareable — so the fee cut became its growth engine and its moat.

P2P matching solved the cold-start problem: no clearing network needed, just offsetting flows between two cities; licensing and local payment systems came later, turning a corridor into a network.

Price transparency is strategy: publish the true rate, charge a visible fee — the saving markets itself, and rivals can't follow without cutting their margins.

The model that started as two friends moving salaries now moves a share of $43T: FY2026 net revenue $2,502.8M, 18.9M customers, $243.5B cross-currency volume at a 0.52% average fee, with infrastructure layers (Wise Account, Business, Platform APIs), 70+ licenses and 6 local clearing systems. In June 2026 Wise proposed shifting its primary listing to the US and launched a share-buyback — no dividends in any FY24–FY26 filing. The 'radically transparent' fintech that listed at $11B in 2021 still prices at about half a percent: the fee it charges is now smaller than the platform it built.
