Antong Holdings, a Chinese container-shipping and logistics company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, fell into a liquidity crisis in 2019. Facing unpaid debts and creditor pressure, it entered a court-supervised reorganization — the Chinese equivalent of a Chapter 11 — with the Quanzhou Intermediate Court managing the process. Vendors, lenders and bondholders stood to lose everything if the fleet stopped.

The reorganization plan, approved by creditors and the court, converted much of Antong's debt into new arrangements and brought in a strategic investor, while the company continued operating its container services. On 16 December 2020 Antong reported to the court that the reorganization plan had been executed; the court confirmed completion, and the company resumed normal operations with a light balance sheet.

The payoff came immediately. In 2021, as global container freight rates exploded during the pandemic supply-chain crisis, Antong's revenue rose 61.2% to ¥7.79 billion and net profit attributable to shareholders reached ¥1.77 billion, up 36.6% year on year — its best result since the crisis. First-quarter 2022 net profit then jumped 1,100% as rates stayed elevated.

Antong's survival was decided by the reorganization, but its profit explosion was decided by timing: the court-trained balance sheet met the freight supercycle with no debt drag, so the boom flowed straight to the bottom line.

Reorganization completed Dec 2020; 2021 revenue grew 61.2% to ¥7.8B and net profit hit ¥1.77B, its strongest year

Debt relief removed interest and principal that would have consumed the freight boom's profit

The reorganization investor brought fresh capital and credibility to restore charter and vendor confidence

Riding on container routes during 2021's rate surge converted market tailwind directly into record earnings

Operational continuity during the process kept ships sailing, so the network never had to be rebuilt

A court reorganization that converts debt into sustainable claims can hand a shipper a clean balance sheet just as the freight cycle turns

Antong continued as a major domestic container carrier, and in 2026 China Merchants' shipping arm bought a 13.8% stake for about ¥1.8 billion, confirming the restored company's strategic value. The case is cited in Chinese restructuring literature as a textbook turnaround from court reorganization to record profit.
