Aramark, the Philadelphia food service and uniform provider, had grown more slowly than its big rival Compass Group, and had angered thousands of mid-level managers by cancelling earned bonuses. On 16 August 2019 Paul Hilal's Mantle Ridge disclosed a 9.8% stake, representing a claim on about 20% of the company, and said it wanted to talk about business, operations, strategy, governance and the executive suite.

Days later Aramark said its long-time CEO Eric Foss was retiring. Analysts read the move as the start of a harder reset, expecting board-level participation, sharper sales culture and operational efficiency. Hilal had a long record of driving exactly that: at Air Products, Canadian Pacific and CSX, his arrival typically led to management change and tighter execution.

Aramark appointed a new CEO and later reconstituted much of its board with Hilal nominees, and over the following year it pushed cost discipline and a renewed focus on its core food and facilities contracts. The company's operating margins and stock improved as the growth problem it had been drifting into was addressed directly. The 13D had written down the thesis, and the outcome followed it.

Aramark got a new CEO and later a new board majority, and embarked on a cost and sales-focused turnaround that lifted its operating margins.

Mantle Ridge put a broad agenda in a public filing, not a narrow complaint.

Aramark's growth under-performance and bonus controversy left it vulnerable to a credible challenge.

Hilal had a visible track record of forcing management change at Air Products, CP and CSX.

The CEO exit opened the door to the operational reset that followed.

An activist that writes down a full agenda about operations, governance and the executive suite can move a slow-growth company faster than internal pressure alone.

Aramark combined its two segments and pushed margins and capital returns, and by the mid-2020s its stock had roughly doubled from the 2020 low.
