Jollibee's founder gave his brother the CEO seat at 60 — global growth followed

Tony Tan Caktiong built Jollibee Foods Corporation from two 1975 ice cream parlors into the Philippines' dominant fast-food group, beating McDonald's at home with brands like Chowking, Greenwich, and Mang Inasal. In August 2013, days after turning 60, he announced he would step down as president and CEO — not immediately, but on a fixed date: July 1, 2014.

The successor was his younger brother Ernesto Tanmantiong, a 1975 store-crew veteran who had risen through every operations rung to become COO in 2012. The year's notice let Ernesto run the transition while Tony moved up to chairman, keeping the founder available without keeping him in charge.

Under Ernesto, JFC executed the global ambition the handover was designed for: it bought The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Smashburger, and Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan, reaching 18 brands and over 6,600 stores across 34 countries by 2023 — versus 881 Jollibee stores at the announcement. It opened a record 542 stores in 2022 alone, and Ernesto was named MAP Management Person of the Year 2023.
