What was changed
Augmedics’ xvision Spine System overlays patient anatomy onto the surgeon’s view using augmented reality, allowing physicians to see spinal structures through skin and tissue during operations. By June 2023 the platform had been used on more than 4,000 patients in the United States, validating its safety and utility.
The $82.5 million Series D, led by CPMG, will fund increased production, broaden the commercial team, and support further clinical studies. Augmedics intends to expand the technology to additional spinal indications and to pursue regulatory clearances that could widen adoption across hospitals.
What it achieved
Funding to scale manufacturing, expand sales force, and generate additional clinical evidence, aiming to make AR‑assisted spine surgery a standard of care.
Why it worked
The 4,000‑patient milestone provided concrete proof of clinical value, reducing perceived risk for investors.
Hospitals were beginning to evaluate AR navigation tools, creating a near‑term market opportunity that required scaling beyond early adopters.
Securing growth capital allowed Augmedics to invest in manufacturing, sales, and evidence generation to meet rising demand.
What can be applied
Demonstrating clinical traction with a breakthrough technology can de‑risk investment and unlock growth capital for scaling in regulated medical markets.
Aftermath
Following the round, Augmedics increased installations of its xvision system across U.S. hospitals, began collecting real‑world outcome data, and explored extensions of the AR platform to other orthopedic and neurosurgical procedures.
