Avaya, which holds the largest installed base of unified communications customers, was forced into Chapter 11 in February 2023 after cloud subscription accounting problems spooked lenders and broke its balance sheet. It was a second trip through bankruptcy for the legacy vendor.

The plan was pre-negotiated and confirmed just 35 days later, on March 22, with formal emergence in early May 2023. It produced about $4B of debt relief and new capital: nearly $4B of debt was written down to about $150M, and the same lenders and investors put in $650M of fresh capital. Avaya emerged with about $650M of liquidity and net leverage below 1x.

The same plan reset the product. CEO Alan Masarek, who joined in 2022, relaunched the Avaya Experience Platform, a cloud contact-center-as-a-service offering, and rationalised older products. The strategy was to let customers move to the cloud at their own pace, pairing premise voice with cloud chat, social and digital features, rather than forcing a rip-and-replace, so Avaya could monetise its base of one in every three contact-center agents.

Avaya emerged in May 2023 with about $650M liquidity and below-1x leverage, and rebuilt around the Avaya Experience Platform serving one in three contact-center agents.

Cloud subscription accounting problems pushed Avaya into a February 2023 Chapter 11.

The pre-negotiated plan wrote nearly $4B of debt down to about $150M and added $650M of capital.

It emerged in May 2023 with about $650M liquidity and net leverage below 1x.

It repositioned around the Avaya Experience Platform and a hybrid, choose-your-journey model.

One in every three contact-center agents uses Avaya, giving it an enormous base to convert.

A prepackaged Chapter 11 can reset a balance sheet while a company resets its product; Avaya turned financial weakness into strength and repositioned around customer experience.

Avaya left the 2023 filing with a much cleaner balance sheet and a single product story built on customer experience. It kept a large installer base and sold to more than 170 countries, using a channel-heavy go-to-market where cloud features are sold alongside premise voice. The restructured debt, lower costs and focused roadmap gave it room to fund cloud and AI features, though it still faced rivals pushing customers straight to multi-tenant cloud.
