What was changed
Bakugan launched in 2008 and quickly became a global franchise — named Toy of the Year and License Property of the Year in 2009 — before fading. On October 9, 2018, Spin Master announced an agreement with TMS Entertainment and Nelvana to relaunch it on the 10th anniversary of the original series.
The coordinated relaunch paired a new animated series, Bakugan Battle Planet, airing on Cartoon Network from December 23, 2018, with a new integrated toy line, a trading card game and a mobile app. The marble-like balls transform into collectible characters when rolled over magnetic cards, with more than 100 Bakugan in season one.
The toy line and card game hit North American retail in January 2019, with a global rollout from Q2 2019 and live 'Bakugan Brawl' tournaments. Spin Master co-founder Ronnen Harary called Bakugan 'a global legacy brand' that had helped evolve the company's approach to entertainment and franchise development.
What it achieved
Integrated relaunch: Bakugan Battle Planet anime, 100+ character toy line, trading card game and mobile app, launched in North America in early 2019.
Why it worked
The original line's magic — transforming magnetic balls — could be rebuilt with new technology.
A TV series, toys, cards and app launched together maximized each touchpoint's pull.
The 10th anniversary gave the relaunch a built-in marketing story and nostalgia hook.
Partnering with Cartoon Network and Takara Tomy gave the brand global distribution.
What can be applied
Reviving a toy brand means rebuilding the whole play ecosystem — show, toys, cards, app — timed to an anniversary that gives the relaunch a story.
Aftermath
Bakugan Battle Planet ran across Cartoon Network, Teletoon and international broadcasters, with the toy and card program rolling out worldwide through 2019. The relaunch showed Spin Master's franchise playbook — owning both the content and the products — and Bakugan rejoined its portfolio of evergreen brands alongside PAW Patrol.
