What was changed
Batelco, the principal telecommunications company of Bahrain, faced the classic incumbent problem: a small, mature home market. Its answer, in the chairman's words, was 'the outcome of three years of strategic planning'. After launching the fintech Beyon Money in December 2021, Batelco announced in January 2022 three new independent digital companies — Beyon Cyber (managed cyber-security services and advisory), Beyon Solutions (an IT and digital-transformation consultancy and system integrator) and Beyon Connect (SaaS platforms and advanced IT for the MENA region).
The explicit strategy was diversification, not abandonment: grow 'beyond the company's core business while maintaining Batelco's position as a leading telecoms company'. In December 2022 the Beyon brand was launched as the parent for Batelco, the digital companies and Batelco's international investments, with the telecom continuing as 'Batelco by Beyon'. On 18 June 2023 the Bahrain Bourse ticker switched from BATELCO to BEYON — 'the Batelco ticker is no longer reflective of our identity', the chairman said — with no change to the legal structure or shareholders' rights.
The restructured group kept compounding. In FY2025 Beyon reported revenues of BD496.6m (US$1.32bn), up 8% year on year, EBITDA of BD188.1m and net profit attributable to equity holders of BD71.3m, with international operations contributing 56% of revenue, up from 54% in 2024 — a Bahraini incumbent now earning most of its money abroad and in digital.
What it achieved
A listed group — ticker BEYON since June 2023 — with Batelco plus four digital companies; 56% of 2025 revenue was international and net profit BD71.3m.
Why it worked
Independent brands let each digital venture recruit, price and sell like a tech firm instead of being buried inside a telecom operator.
Keeping Batelco intact preserved the cash engine and dividends that fund the expansion.
The parent rebrand told investors the group is no longer a single-market telco, and the 56% international revenue mix backs that claim.
Cyber, cloud and ICT services target the digitisation spending of Gulf governments and enterprises that Batelco already served.
What can be applied
A legacy incumbent can re-platform without breaking up: carve digital ventures into independent brands under one listed parent, keep the core cash engine, and let the new units chase growth.
Aftermath
Beyon's FY2025 results credited revenue growth to mobile, fixed broadband, wholesale and digital services, with Beyon Cyber, Beyon Connect and Beyon Solutions named as scaling businesses. The group now oversees Batelco, four digital companies and overseas investments, and the once purely Bahraini incumbent draws the majority of its revenue from international operations — the endpoint its three-year plan set out in January 2022.
