What was changed
Benelli, founded in Pesaro in 1911, was one of motorcycling's most historic Italian brands, but it suffered during the global recession and was bought by China's Qianjiang Group in 2005. For years it stayed a marginal player.
Qianjiang's strategy was to keep Benelli's design and R&D in Pesaro while shifting manufacturing to China for cost. The payoff model was the TRK 502, an affordable 500cc adventure tourer that combined Italian styling with a low price.
The results compounded: Benelli sold 59,750 motorcycles in 2018, its first year above 50,000, then a record 63,000-plus in 2019, with a 27.8 percent jump in Western Europe. By 2020 the TRK 502 was Italy's best-selling midsize motorcycle, and in the first half of 2022 Benelli was the No. 1 motorcycle brand in Italy with a 10.8 percent market share.
What it achieved
TRK 502 became Italy's best-selling midsize motorcycle, and Benelli topped Italy's H1 2022 brand rankings with 10.8% share after record 2019 sales of 63,000-plus.
Why it worked
Pesaro design preserved the Italian identity buyers wanted.
Chinese manufacturing made the price unbeatable.
The TRK 502 hit a growing segment: midsize adventure.
Record volumes funded more models, deepening the flywheel.
What can be applied
Heritage plus cheap, well-engineered products can win: Qianjiang kept Benelli's Italian design soul, moved production to China, and used an affordable adventure bike to make the brand a volume leader.
Aftermath
By mid-2022 more than 20,000 TRK 502s had been registered in Italy since 2017 — the model alone was half of Benelli's Italian sales — and the revived brand had become a permanent fixture at the top of Europe's motorcycle charts.
