What was changed
In 2013, Ahad Mohammad Bhai and Navidul Huq launched Bongo to stream Bangla content for the diaspora, but quickly realized that existing platforms served only Bangladesh's middle-class users with smartphones and stable internet. The majority of the population relied on low-end phones and 2G networks, making conventional streaming inaccessible and expensive.
They decided to rebuild the service from the ground up: developing their own low-bandwidth streaming software, partnering with over 1,100 ISPs for direct peering, and working with telecoms like Grameenphone to offer the Bioscope app. By adopting a sachet-pricing model, subscriptions as low as $0.30 per week, they attracted millions of low-income users, achieved profitability with $9.5 million revenue, and surpassed 990 million monthly views.
What it achieved
Bongo reached profitability with $9.5M revenue, over 990M monthly views, and partnered with multiple telecoms, proving a low‑cost streaming model for mass markets.
Why it worked
The founders identified a clear market gap: affordable video access for the low-income majority.
They chose to build proprietary infrastructure rather than rely on off-the-shelf solutions unsuited to local networks.
The sachet-pricing and telco partnerships enabled mass adoption and sustainable revenue.
What can be applied
Success came from building infrastructure for low-end phones and 2G networks, partnering with telcos to leverage distribution, showing constraints can drive innovative inclusive business models.
Aftermath
After proving the model with Bioscope, Bongo expanded its platform to other telecom partners such as Robi Axiata and launched its own BongoBD app, offering original content from popular YouTubers and web series. The company continued to grow its user base and revenue, licensing shows like “Gojodontini” to international broadcasters, and demonstrated that a locally tailored, low-cost streaming service can thrive in an emerging market.
