What was changed
Surge, a citrus soda Coca-Cola launched in 1996 to compete with Mountain Dew, was discontinued in the early 2000s after sales slumped. But a cult following never gave up: the 'SURGE Movement' Facebook page spent three years lobbying for its return and grew past 130,000 followers.
In September 2014 Coca-Cola relented, re-releasing Surge in its original formula and 16-ounce cans — sold exclusively on Amazon, the first Coke product ever offered online-only and the first discontinued Coca-Cola brand to return. On launch day the 12-packs sold out twice.
Coca-Cola called the fan campaign 'the best compliment any brand could hope for.' The limited online test confirmed demand, and in September 2015 Surge expanded to store shelves across 23 or more states.
What it achieved
Surge 12-packs sold out twice on launch day; a year later it reached stores in 23+ states, the first discontinued Coke brand to return.
Why it worked
The campaign proved real demand without paid research.
Amazon-only distribution limited risk and created scarcity.
Original formula and retro packaging maximized nostalgia appeal.
The relaunch generated free media coverage.
What can be applied
A vocal fan base is a free demand test: an online-only limited relaunch let Coca-Cola verify that nostalgia was real before spending on retail distribution and advertising.
Aftermath
Surge moved from Amazon exclusivity to retail stores in 2015 and remained in production for years. The playbook — test a dormant brand with a limited online drop, then scale — was copied across the beverage industry for other 1990s relaunches.
