What was changed
Dhanin Chearavanont, youngest son of CP's founder, ran Charoen Pokphand Group as chairman and CEO for 48 years, building a 1921 Bangkok seed shop into one of the world's largest producers of animal feed and livestock, with businesses from 7-Eleven Thailand to telecoms. The question was never whether the group would stay in the family, but how to pass it to three capable sons without a fight.
In 2017, at 78, Dhanin made an unusual choice: he did not crown one heir. He named his eldest son Soopakij chairman and his youngest son Suphachai CEO, keeping for himself only the role of senior chairman. The design separated long-term ownership oversight from day-to-day execution — and left no single throne to contest.
Under the two brothers the group pushed into digital and consolidation: Suphachai engineered the 2023 True–dtac merger creating Thailand's largest telecom operator. By 2025 the Chearavanonts were worth $53.3 billion, the only Southeast Asian family on Bloomberg's list of the world's 25 richest families — up from roughly $28 billion in the early 2020s.
What it achieved
Family wealth reached $53.3B by 2025, the only Southeast Asian clan among the world's 25 richest families
Why it worked
Forty-eight years of founder control made a single-heir choice explosive; dividing roles defused rivalry by design.
The chairman-CEO split matched the sons' profiles: the elder for continuity, the younger for deals and digital.
Dhanin stayed on as senior chairman, giving the arrangement a referee during its first years.
The handover was announced cleanly and at once, leaving no vacuum for factions to form around.
What can be applied
Splitting chairman and CEO between siblings separates guardianship from operations, giving each heir a distinct mandate instead of a shared throne to fight over.
Aftermath
The arrangement held without public dispute. CP Group remains the region's largest agri-food conglomerate, and in 2024 Dhanin received the Malcolm S. Forbes Lifetime Achievement Award, publicly blessing the succession he designed.
