Dunkaroos — graham cookies with frosting, launched in 1992 — became a lunchbox staple of the 1990s before being discontinued in the US and lingering only in Canada.

Millennials grew up and kept asking for it, so General Mills decided the nostalgia wave justified a US relaunch.

Announced in February 2020 for a summer return, the relaunch leaned into fan culture: 5,000 free packs were given away in April 2020, and the vanilla flavour hit retailers nationwide in June 2020.

The launch was essentially a marketing campaign built on memory — neon colours, lunch tables and 90s-kid identity — rather than new product innovation.

The relaunch returned the discontinued snack to US retail nationwide, with 5,000 free packs going to fans before the June 2020 shelf date.

The brand already had a generation of emotionally attached former customers.

Social media made the announcement itself an event.

Limited availability in Canada had kept the brand alive without US investment.

The product was cheap to make, so the relaunch risk was mostly marketing spend.

A discontinued product can return cheaply if you treat long-time fans as a market and nostalgia as the launch plan.

Dunkaroos stayed on shelves and became a reference case for nostalgia relaunches in packaged food, alongside other General Mills retro plays.
