FedEx has chased a stronger European foothold since acquiring TNT Express in 2016, but a soft market for parcel carriers left the region's back-office and commercial functions spread across countries and expensive to run. In June 2024 the company announced plans to cut between 1,700 and 2,000 such jobs in Europe.

The plan consolidates activities performed across Europe into select shared activity centers in countries best aligned with FedEx's needs and its existing real estate footprint, and it is subject to an 18-month consultation under local law. FedEx expects the plan to save $125M-$175M annually starting in fiscal 2027. FedEx International COO and Airline CEO Richard Smith called the moves necessary actions that are essential to putting FedEx on the right path, and said customers should see no change in service.

The cuts extend a broader transformation rather than replace it: CFO John Dietrich had said in March 2024 that headcount fell by nearly 22,000 over the past year with more opportunities ahead, and the announcement sits alongside the ongoing DRIVE program and the merger of the separate Express and Ground networks. CEO Raj Subramaniam still calls Europe a significant opportunity and a high amount of focus for him personally.

Expected savings of $125M-$175M annually starting fiscal 2027; company-wide headcount was already down nearly 22,000 year over year by March 2024.

A soft market for parcel carriers made Europe's structural cost base unsustainable.

Back-office and commercial activities were still duplicated across European countries years after the TNT Express acquisition.

Consolidating into shared activity centers reuses the existing real-estate footprint while promising customers no change in service.

European law requires an 18-month consultation, so announcing in June 2024 was the way to start that clock toward fiscal 2027 savings.

Acquired regional scale only pays off after you merge the back office behind it; in Europe, budget the consultation period local law requires before any savings arrive.

Savings of $125M-$175M a year are expected only from fiscal 2027 because of the consultation period, and FedEx did not specify which activities would move. The reduction is part of a company-wide shrinkage of nearly 22,000 roles in the year to March 2024 and runs alongside DRIVE and the Express-Ground network merger, while management keeps framing Europe as its main remaining growth opportunity.
