What was changed
Fiat was fighting for relevance in 2007, decades after the original 500 had given ordinary Italians their first mass-market car. On July 4, 2007 — exactly 50 years after the first 500 left Turin — the company launched a new 500 at a public celebration across the city.
The car kept the original's rounded silhouette but was built on a modern small-car platform with contemporary engines and safety. Fiat's own materials called it a new beginning for the company, and the launch drew an estimated 100,000 people to Turin.
The formula worked. In 2008 the 500 achieved a record 13.9% share of its European segment, and in 2009 it recorded its top sales volume of approximately 186,000 units, becoming the leader in its class.
Production scaled from Poland to Mexico, and in November 2012 the one-millionth new 500 rolled off the line. The relaunch had turned a fifty-year-old name into Fiat's strongest small-car product.
What it achieved
The 500 hit a record 13.9% share of its European segment in 2008, peaked near 186,000 units in 2009, and the millionth car came off the line by November 2012.
Why it worked
The 500's heritage was universally recognized, so the relaunch needed no explanation.
Modern engineering underneath the retro shell made it a credible 2007 car, not a replica.
The event-style launch in Turin converted nostalgia into national attention and early demand.
A single, focused model line let Fiat concentrate its marketing and production capacity.
What can be applied
Relive the icon, don't replicate it: keeping the 500's silhouette and name while rebuilding the car underneath let Fiat sell nostalgia as modern small-car engineering instead of a museum piece.
Aftermath
The 500 stayed Fiat's segment leader into the 2010s and was extended into a family of models as production moved to Poland and Mexico. The relaunch became the reference point for Fiat's later use of heritage design and restored the small-car line to the center of the brand.
