What was changed
Fresenius Medical Care, the global dialysis group, spent roughly four years under CEO Helen Giza — previously three years as its CFO — running the FME25+ transformation: reshaping the organisation, optimising the portfolio and simplifying processes, which cut the company's cost base by approximately €1.2 billion.
By the second quarter of 2026 the numbers showed the reset landing: group operating income excluding special items rose 20%, or 23% at constant currency, to €569 million, lifting the adjusted operating margin to 11.7% from 9.9% a year earlier, while organic revenue grew 5%, adjusted earnings per share rose 28% at constant currency, and the full-year 2026 outlook was reaffirmed.
With that phase complete, the supervisory board did something unusual: it said out loud that the transformation had largely accomplished its objectives and that the next stage needed a different leadership profile. On 12 October 2026 Shervin J. Korangy took over as CEO and Management Board chair, succeeding Giza. Korangy combines healthcare operating experience — he led BVI Medical from 2017 to 2026, building it into an ophthalmology-focused medtech platform reaching almost 90 countries — with years in private equity, restructuring and corporate finance.
The board framed the company as at a strategic inflection point: the task shifts from restructuring-led improvement — cost removal, portfolio simplification, stabilisation — to converting a leaner cost structure into durable organic growth, new products, stronger returns on capital and, potentially, a better shareholder valuation. The transition lands not because performance is broken but precisely because it has improved.
What it achieved
Cost base down about €1.2B; Q2 2026 operating income up 20% to €569M, adjusted margin 11.7% from 9.9%, organic revenue +5%, adjusted EPS +28%.
Why it worked
Restructuring leaders are measured on cost removal and simplification; scaling revenue, innovation and capital allocation is a different job, and the board said so explicitly.
FME25+ had largely delivered — margins up, costs down, outlook reaffirmed — so waiting longer risked pairing a completed phase with a leader chosen for the previous one.
Korangy's blend of operating and restructuring experience covers both sides of the handover: keeping the savings while pushing growth.
The unusually explicit 'inflection point' language was meant to give investors a clear rationale rather than the usual vague 'new chapter' framing.
What can be applied
Restructuring and growth reward different leadership. Name the phase change explicitly and swap profiles at the inflection point, instead of asking a cost-cutter to become a growth builder.
Aftermath
Korangy took office on 12 October 2026 with a mandate for profitable growth, innovation and stronger capital allocation. The company entered the handover with Q2 2026 operating income at €569 million and an 11.7% adjusted margin, and its full-year 2026 outlook reaffirmed.
