What was changed
G.I. Joe, a 1960s toy-soldier line that became a 1980s action-figure phenomenon, had been largely dormant. For more than a year and a half Hasbro worked on a relaunch, then in June 2020 kicked off a YO JOE campaign with a new website and the brand's first official social channels.
The vehicle was the Classified Series: 6-inch, highly articulated figures with premium deco that reimagined the 1980s Real American Hero heroes and villains. It debuted at Toy Fair New York in February 2020 and launched that June. By 2022 Hasbro's team said the relaunch vastly outperformed initial expectations, with some figures selling out so quickly online that fans got angry, and a crowd-funded in-scale HISS tank funded in a weekend.
What it achieved
The Classified relaunch vastly outperformed Hasbro's expectations; some figures sold out so fast that fans complained, and a crowd-funded HISS tank funded in a weekend.
Why it worked
Moving from small mass-market figures to a premium 6-inch line let Hasbro sell to adult collectors rather than only to children.
Rebuilding the brand digitally (new site, social and crowdfunding) created a community that sustained demand and turned scarce drops into events.
What can be applied
A dormant IP is not dead — it is waiting for the right scale and price point. A premium collector line can revive a toy brand better than a mass-market relaunch.
Aftermath
The Classified line became a live franchise with rolling waves, exclusives and an expanding character roster, and re-established G.I. Joe as a Hasbro cornerstone; the brand returned to retail shelves, conventions and licensing after its long hiatus.
