Gregory Rockson graduated from college with a job offer at Google, but he was troubled by the fragmented drug supply chain and limited access to medicines in his home country of Ghana. Instead of accepting the Silicon Valley role, he chose to return home to tackle the problem he had witnessed growing up.

In 2013 he founded mPharma, a vendor‑managed inventory software and retail pharmacy operator. Over the next decade the company expanded to six African countries, raised more than $40 million from investors such as Social Capital and Jim Breyer, and improved the availability and affordability of essential medicines across the region.

Built mPharma into a health‑tech operating in several African countries, securing over $40 million in venture funding and improving medicine access.

He felt a personal responsibility to improve healthcare access in Ghana after seeing the challenges faced by family and friends.

He identified a clear market opportunity: African health‑care systems were underserved by technology solutions that could streamline inventory and reduce costs.

He believed that a locally founded company could create sustainable change by aligning incentives with patients, pharmacies and suppliers.

Founders can achieve large impact by leveraging local insights and returning to their home markets, even when faced with attractive overseas opportunities.

Today mPharma operates pharmacies and provides inventory management tools in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, Ethiopia and Malawi. The venture has raised multiple rounds of funding exceeding $40 million, partnered with governments and NGOs to expand access to chronic disease medications, and continues to scale its technology platform across the continent.
