What was changed
Kavak was founded in 2016 in Mexico City by the García brothers with a radical premise for Latin America: buy used cars outright, recondition them, and resell with mechanical certification, warranty and seven-day returns — the new-car experience applied to used cars. In October 2020 it became Mexico's first unicorn at a $1 billion valuation.
The peak year was 2021: a September round led by General Catalyst raised $700 million at an $8.7 billion valuation — making it Latin America's second-most-valuable startup after Nubank — with total funding above $1.5 billion, funding expansion into Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Chile.
The region's funding climate cooled the ambitions: two 2022 layoff rounds (June and November), a November 2023 decision to pause Peru and Colombia (closed in January 2024), and a February 2024 refocus on Mexico with five new points of sale in the first quarter. A down round followed in 2025 — Bloomberg Línea reported the valuation cut of about $6.5 billion or more — leaving Kavak as Mexico's leading used-car platform with a leaner footprint.
What it achieved
Mexico's first unicorn ($1B, 2020), Latin America's #2 startup ($8.7B, 2021) with $1.5B+ raised — before 2022-24 exits forced a Mexico-centric refocus.
Why it worked
Trust as product: certification, warranties and returns attacked the core reason people avoided used cars — the same playbook as Carmax, transplanted into a far less institutional market.
The capital cycle wrote the ending: $8.7B priced hypergrowth, but an inventory-heavy marketplace needs cheap credit — when rates rose, the markets it couldn't serve were closed first.
What can be applied
Industrializing trust in an opaque market is real value — but inventory-heavy platforms are leveraged to credit cycles; the model that peaks at $8.7B contracts when funding tightens.
Aftermath
Kavak survived as Mexico's leading used-car platform: after the 2022–23 layoffs, the November 2023 Peru/Colombia pause (closed Jan 2024) and a February 2024 Mexico refocus, a 2025 down round cut the valuation further — a canonical Latin American venture boom-bust.
