What was changed
Founded in 2018 by former executives of Brazil’s 99Taxi unicorn, Kovi launched a car‑rental platform for ride‑hailing drivers who could not afford to own a vehicle. In São Paulo, fewer than half of Brazilians own a car, and vehicle prices are far above average incomes, creating a major barrier for gig‑economy workers seeking to drive for Uber, 99, or Lyft.
To overcome this constraint, Kovi’s leaders decided in early 2023 to raise a $30M Series A led by Global Founders Capital. The funding let the company grow its fleet from a few hundred to over 3,000 active cars, increase headcount from about 20 to 110 employees, and open an office in Mexico City, positioning Kovi to scale across Latin America.
What it achieved
Fleet grew to over 3,000 active cars, headcount rose from ~20 to 110 employees, and an office opened in Mexico City
Why it worked
High vehicle costs and low car ownership in Brazil left many ride‑hailing drivers unable to work, limiting Kovi’s market despite strong demand.
Existing cash flow was insufficient to purchase and maintain a large fleet, constraining growth and forcing the startup to seek external capital.
Investor interest in Latin American mobility startups presented a timely opportunity to secure growth funding on favorable terms.
What can be applied
Access to growth capital enables asset‑light scaling in emerging markets where vehicle ownership barriers restrict gig‑economy participation
Aftermath
After the Series A, Kovi reported monthly driver growth of about 68 percent, expanded its fleet to more than 3,000 vehicles, entered Mexico City, and began hiring across technology, operations, and customer experience teams to support further regional expansion.
