Lifan, founded by Yin Mingshan and once China's first listed private carmaker, was hit by losses across its auto business and a heavy debt load, and in 2020 its wholly-owned subsidiaries were pushed toward restructuring by creditors. In August 2020 the stock was flagged with a delisting risk, and a court-led reorganization followed for the group.

The rescue brought a strategic investor: Geely Technology Group, the automotive arm of China's Geely empire, participated in Lifan's recapitalization. The new holder renamed the company Lifan Technology, kept its motorcycle and engine businesses, and imported Geely's battery-swap EV technology as Lifan's first new product line — a new battery-swappable model launched in January 2021.

In April 2021 the company's stock had its delisting flag removed and changed its name back to Lifan, and 2020 results showed the turnaround was real: revenue of ¥3.637 billion for the year, a swing to profit, with motorcycle engines and general-purpose engines growing. The market re-rated the shares on the Geely connection and the EV pivot.

The Lifan case became a model for Chinese auto restructuring: rather than liquidation, the company's factory capacity, brand and licenses were recycled into a strategic owner's product plan, preserving jobs and production lines that a wind-down would have scrapped.

Relisted as Lifan Technology under Geely; 2020 revenue of ¥3.6B and a return to profit with a new battery-swap EV model

A strategic investor with products (Geely) gave the restructured company a future beyond debt relief

Keeping the motorcycle and engine businesses gave the new Lifan immediate cash-making segments

The battery-swap EV line positioned the revived brand in China's hot NEV market

Court-led reorganization allowed the new owner to take the assets free of legacy liabilities

A bankrupt manufacturer can be reborn by handing the platform to a strategic owner who brings products, not just money

Lifan Technology kept operating as a smaller but viable EV and motorcycle maker under Geely's sphere, its stock recovering after the name change. Chinese media continue to cite it as a rare successful rebirth of a bankrupt private carmaker through strategic acquisition.
