Micro Machines were a defining toy line of the 1980s and 1990s — tiny, highly detailed vehicles that folded into pocket-sized playsets. After more than a decade off shelves, owner Hasbro and toy maker Jazwares decided the nostalgia was worth a relaunch.

The 2020 revival came together as a partnership: Hasbro, which owns the property, and Jazwares, which had built a reputation on taking archive brands to modern retail. Jeremy Padawer, EVP and partner at Jazwares, framed it as a line 'forever etched in pop culture and the minds of adults who adored them as kids.'

The product line was a blend of the familiar and the new. The cornerstone was Super Van City, an updated version of the classic transforming playset with over 20 play locations, retailing at $49.99. Around it sat vehicle packs: single blind packs at $1.99, starter packs at $4.99, world packs at $9.99 and core playsets at $14.99. The whole range went to Target and Walmart, the two widest toy channels in the US.

The property had a huge nostalgic adult fanbase willing to introduce it to their own kids

A single strong hero product, Super Van City, anchored the relaunch

Pricing from $1.99 to $49.99 captured both impulse and gift purchases

Target and Walmart gave it instant national distribution and shelf pull

A nostalgic toy brand comes back on a modern product plus a proven retail channel, not on the logo alone

The relaunch put a dormant 30-year-old brand back in the country's two biggest toy retailers. The line blended the retro vehicles adults remembered with updated playsets designed for modern play, and Jazwares positioned it to reconnect a generation of parents with the toys of their childhood. The 2020 timing coincided with a nostalgic toy wave that had already revived other 1980s properties for Hasbro.
