Micron spent the mid-2010s trapped in a brutal memory downturn. DRAM and NAND prices fell for years and the company posted a net loss of $276 million in fiscal 2016, with revenue falling 23%. It had kept investing in smaller, cheaper technology nodes even while the industry was shedding capacity.

Sanjay Mehrotra, a co-founder of SanDisk, took over as chief executive in 2017 and pushed the company to concentrate on the high-value end of memory, where supply was tighter and margins better. The industry also consolidated and disciplined itself on adding new supply rather than chasing volume.

The turn was dramatic. In fiscal 2017 total net sales rose 64% and net income flipped to $5.09 billion from a $276 million loss. Operating income went from $168 million to $5.87 billion, and the company's margins expanded sharply as DDR4 and enterprise SSDs sold at much better prices.

Much of it was the market turning, but Micron's technology investment meant it was positioned to capture the recovery with a lower cost per bit than rivals that had cut capital during the downturn.

Net income swung to $5.09 billion in fiscal 2017 from a $276 million loss a year earlier, on total net sales up 64%.

Years of DRAM and NAND oversupply had driven prices and margins to a floor.

Micron kept investing in process technology while peers pulled back.

Industry supply discipline and consolidation ended the price war.

Focusing on high-value DDR4, server and SSD sockets lifted the mix.

The lower cost per bit captured more of every unit sold in the rebound.

In a deep commodity cycle, the companies that keep spending on cost per bit and stick to supply discipline are the ones that capture the recovery.

Micron rode the 2017-2018 memory boom to further record profits, then used the cash to pay down debt and invest in next-generation DRAM and NAND. The company remained a top-three memory maker, and 2017 marked the point it left the loss-making years behind.
