M.V. Murugappan, a former chairman of the Murugappa Group who once headed Carborundum Universal, died in September 2017 leaving only daughters. His widow and daughters inherited a combined 8.15 per cent stake in Ambadi Investments Ltd, the family holding company. Eldest daughter Valli Arunachalam asked the family to either buy the stake at a fair price or give her a board seat in Ambadi; she was denied the seat.

Arunachalam fought publicly and through legal channels for nearly three years. The dispute put a national spotlight on the rights of female scions in India's business families, while the family itself restrained from open debate on the issue.

The turning point came on August 20, 2023, when family members met with their respective advisors and recorded the terms of a family arrangement in a memorandum: terms confidential, transactions to be executed within 90 days, all legal proceedings to be withdrawn, and no listed group company a party to the deal. When the settlement emerged, Murugappa group stocks jumped up to 6 per cent; by November 1, 2023, the family confirmed the arrangement was complete.

Arrangement completed by November 2023 with all legal proceedings withdrawn; Murugappa group stocks jumped up to 6% when the settlement emerged.

Both sides saw the futility of prolonging the dispute and agreed to settle out of court within a defined timeframe.

The family refused to engage in any open debate, denying the fight the public war of words that has scarred other Indian business families.

The settlement was documented first — a memorandum entered by the members with advisors present — so execution followed an agreed script rather than fresh negotiation.

No listed company forming part of the group was a party to the arrangement, keeping the operating businesses insulated from a private family deal.

Put a family settlement in writing — a memorandum with advisors present, in a fixed timeframe; a documented deal ends an inheritance fight faster than court.

The settlement removed the overhang that had hung over Murugappa group stocks, Moneycontrol reported, letting management and shareholders refocus on growth. Neither side disclosed whether Arunachalam received the board seat or a buyout, citing confidentiality. Her three-year campaign nonetheless became a national reference point for daughters' inheritance rights in India's business families — the spotlight Moneycontrol said her fight put on female scions. The family confirmed in November 2023 that all legal proceedings between the branches would be withdrawn after completing the agreed steps.
