Piercing Pagoda was Signet Jewelers' smallest banner, contributing only 6% of corporate sales in fiscal 2021 and feeling outdated as a mall jewelry kiosk. Signet decided to give it a new identity rather than quietly run it into the ground.

In 2021 the company tested a rebrand under the name Banter by Piercing Pagoda, repositioning the brand around piercing, self-expression and affordable jewelry. The test name signaled a shift in tone from a generic jewelry stand to a curated personal-expression brand.

The results were quick. Piercing Pagoda delivered around 140% year-over-year e-commerce growth in fiscal 2021 and its sixth straight year of positive same-store sales. It posted its strongest quarter ever in the first quarter of fiscal 2022.

Encouraged, Signet expanded the rebrand from the initial 100 stores to 200, and set plans to open up to 100 additional locations.

Rebranded as Banter, recorded its strongest quarter ever, saw e-commerce up roughly 140% in fiscal 2021, and expanded from 100 to 200 renamed stores.

Banter continued to expand and became a growth banner for Signet, with more stores and a sharpened experiential focus under a new president appointed in 2023.
