Droga Raia and Drogasil merged — and built Brazil's largest pharmacy chain

Droga Raia traces to 1905 (founded in Araraquara, São Paulo state) and Drogasil to 1935; both became top-two national chains with complementary regional strength. On 2 August 2011 they announced the merger and defined the share-exchange ratio; Brazil's antitrust body approved it unanimously on 23 May 2012, and the combination was completed as Raia Drogasil.

The merged chain consolidated fast: the Onofre pharmacy network was acquired in 2019, and the store count went from roughly 700 to more than 3,000, making it Brazil's largest pharmacy chain with about a 16.1% national share (RD Saúde IR). 2023 results: revenue R$36.3 billion with net profit of R$1.1 billion (Estadão).

The wave it started kept rolling: third-player Pague Menos separately acquired Extrafarma (2021 announcement, ~R$737M closing) — confirming that scale consolidation was the industry's dominant play.
