The Renault 5, once France's best-selling car and sold as the Le Car in the US, was discontinued in 1996. As Renault shifted to electric under its Renaulution plan, it chose to bring the nameplate back rather than launch a new small EV.

After a 2021 prototype, the production R5 E-Tech debuted in 2024 with a deliberately modern retro design, nodding to the original with bright colours, LED headlamps, vertical rear lights, sculpted wings and hidden rear door handles.

It was the first model on the AmpR Small platform, and offered two battery options, 40 and 52kWh, delivering up to 186 or 249 miles of range. It started at about 25,000 euros ($27,000) in Europe, with a market launch in September 2024.

Design vice president Gilles Vidal framed it as triggering emotion rather than nostalgia, saying the goal was a vibrant, energetic car. The R5 led the AmpR small-car family, to be followed by revived Twingo and 4 nameplates.

The Renault 5 E-Tech hit Europe in September 2024 from about 25,000 euros, with 40 and 52kWh batteries and up to 249 miles of range.

The R5 nameplate carried strong emotional weight from its original run.

It was revived as an EV rather than a retro petrol recreation.

The AmpR Small platform gave it a lower-cost electric foundation.

A 25,000-euro starting price made the EV affordable and accessible.

It led the AmpR family, with Twingo and 4 revivals to follow.

An old nameplate can carry a new technology better than a new name; Renault used the 5's emotional pull to sell an affordable EV and lead its small-car electric push.

The Renault 5 E-Tech relaunched the nameplate as a battery-electric city car in September 2024, from about 25,000 euros, offering two battery options and up to 249 miles of range. It became the first product on the AmpR Small platform and set up renewed Twingo and Renault 4 revivals. The bet was that a familiar name could de-risk the transition to affordable EVs.
