Deng Xiaoping's 1992 southern tour pushed tens of thousands of Hong Kong factory lines into the Pearl River Delta, and the freight of documents, samples and bills across the border exploded. Wang Wei, 22, registered SF Express in Shunde on 26 March 1993 with ¥100,000 borrowed from his father and a six-person team, undercutting the HK–Guangzhou lane at ¥40 where rivals charged ¥70 — the 'smuggler' niche, starting with three offices in Shunde and Zhongshan.

Wang scaled by franchising (1996–97): every new point became a company owned by its local operator, and within a few years SF held roughly 70% of the HK–mainland road-express lane and stretched into the Yangtze Delta, central, southwest and north China. But franchisees smuggled parcels and ran their own affairs — 'each contract point was a small kingdom'. A customer complaint in 1999 triggered the great buy-back: Wang offered cash to every franchise owner to leave ('buy the owners, keep the staff'), finished by 2002, and moved headquarters to Shenzhen with about 180 outlets under one owner.

In 2003, with SARS grounding airfreight and cutting rates, Wang chartered five freighters from Yangtze River Express — the first private courier in Chinese aviation — locking the premium 'small parcel, under ¥20/kg' positioning. The numbers followed: 2016 revenue ¥57.48B and net profit ¥4.18B (annual report); the 24 February 2017 backdoor listing through Dingtai New Material (¥43.3B asset injection) closed the first day with a ¥231B market cap, crossing ¥300B within days.

Direct ownership became speed: ~70% of HK-mainland express by 1997, revenue ¥57.5B in 2016 at ¥22.15 per parcel, and a ¥231B market cap on listing in 2017.

Franchising buys speed but sells control; when the product is a service standard, owning it is the product — Wang paid cash to every franchisee, finished in three years, stayed single-owner.

Crisis-timing assets: the 2003 SARS airfreight glut handed SF its aviation capacity at a discount years before same-day delivery became the industry's battleground.

Choose the mode that matches the product: franchise for speed, direct for control — buy the franchisees back before the network outgrows you, and buy capacity in downturns rivals cannot.

SF grew into China's most valuable courier: 2016 revenue ¥57.48B and net profit ¥4.18B, with the industry's highest average parcel yield (¥22.15 vs about ¥13 for the franchised 'Tongda' rivals). The February 2017 A-share backdoor listing ran to ¥231B on day one, ¥300B+ within days and a ¥568B peak in February 2021. The direct model remains the premium lane of Chinese logistics, distinct from the franchise pricing wars of YTO, STO and ZTO.
