What was changed
Skymark, Japan's second private domestic airline, filed for civil rehabilitation in January 2015 after an aggressive expansion collapsed. In FY2015 (ended March 2016) revenue fell 11% to ¥72.1B, operating loss was ¥17.6B and the net loss reached ¥39.3B as debt was forgiven.
Management shrank the fleet, cut routes and costs, and eliminated loss-making services; Skymark exited court protection in March 2016. ANA Holdings took a 16.5% stake and began a commercial partnership, giving the low-cost carrier feed and financial credibility.
The turnaround showed in the filings: FY2016 returned to an operating profit of ¥1.53B, and FY2017 delivered revenue of ¥75.6B (+4.9%), operating profit of ¥6.72B (4.4x) and a net profit of ¥6.78B — the first in four years, against a mid-term target of ¥80B revenue and ¥7B operating profit by FY2018.
What it achieved
FY2016 operating profit ¥1.53B after a ¥17.6B loss; FY2017 net profit ¥6.78B (first in four years) on revenue of ¥75.6B, with operating profit up 4.4x to ¥6.72B.
Why it worked
Fleet and route cuts removed loss-making capacity.
An ANA partnership brought feed, code-sharing and financial stability.
A lean single-class model matched what price-sensitive flyers wanted.
What can be applied
After a collapse, survival comes from simplifying the business model, cutting fixed costs and accepting a stronger partner; the profit follows from that discipline, not from optimism.
Aftermath
Skymark stayed profitable after rehabilitation and kept growing its domestic network; the ANA tie-up deepened over the years and anchored the carrier's second life.
